Message from ATA Conventions regarding inclement weather and safe travels...

“On the two school days of your assigned teachers’ convention, you have a legal and
professional responsibility to attend Convention. If you are not able to make it safely to your
assigned convention, however, your collective agreement may include impassable roads or
inclement weather clauses that you can access. If your collective agreement does not include
language specific to road conditions or weather, you may make use of the personal leave
clauses of your agreement in most cases. Please be aware that using any of these types of
leave may require you to pay substitute costs, forego a portion of your salary and benefits, or
report to your school or another work location in your district. Refer to your collective

Flag Rugby (Non-Contact) for Schools

Over the past few years, Medicine Hat has been implementing a Flag Rugby program for middle schools. To date, we have well over 100 participants from multiple schools. This session is designed to support individuals interested in developing a flag rugby program at their school. In addition, many of the activities and planning offered in the session will be fantastic activities for any teacher interested in adding something new to their Physical Education of DPA programs, at any grade level. No previous rugby experience is necessary. Flag rugby is entry level, and very easy to learn and deliver. This will be a blended discussion and activity-based session, though you are also welcome to attend and observe if unable to be physically active.

Teaching Basic Functional Weightlifting Movement in a Group Setting

This active participant session will provide participants the knowledge, skills, cues and drills to teach youth basic functional weightlifting movements within a group setting. By the end of this session, participants will have a toolbox that they can rely on to build movement, identify common errors accompanied with corrections to those errors. Functional movement areas of focus will be squat, front squat, deadlift, press, push press, and thruster. All movements will be taught without load but come prepared to move as we will learn by doing. No prior knowledge is required.  Session will be capped at 35 participants.
