Message from ATA Conventions regarding inclement weather and safe travels...
“On the two school days of your assigned teachers’ convention, you have a legal and professional responsibility to attend Convention. If you are not able to make it safely to your assigned convention, however, your collective agreement may include impassable roads or inclement weather clauses that you can access. If your collective agreement does not include language specific to road conditions or weather, you may make use of the personal leave clauses of your agreement in most cases. Please be aware that using any of these types of leave may require you to pay substitute costs, forego a portion of your salary and benefits, or report to your school or another work location in your district. Refer to your collective agreement for more information. Should you require any additional information or if you need assistance interpreting your collective agreement, please contact Teacher Employment Services at 1-800-232-7208 or 780-447-9400.”

Through outcome-first planning, you will explore practical ways to organize physical education and wellness lessons into meaningful and intentional themes. The themes you create will allow for flexible and responsive student-centered programming, while directly targeting the outcomes from the organizing ideas featured in the Alberta K-6 Physical Education & Wellness Curriculum. We will also discover ways that you can streamline assessment while maintaining authenticity. This session is sure to inspire creativity within and help you refine your practice.
Over the past few years, Medicine Hat has been implementing a Flag Rugby program for middle schools. To date, we have well over 100 participants from multiple schools. This session is designed to support individuals interested in developing a flag rugby program at their school. In addition, many of the activities and planning offered in the session will be fantastic activities for any teacher interested in adding something new to their Physical Education of DPA programs, at any grade level. No previous rugby experience is necessary. Flag rugby is entry level, and very easy to learn and deliver. This will be a blended discussion and activity-based session, though you are also welcome to attend and observe if unable to be physically active.
This active participant session will provide participants the knowledge, skills, cues and drills to teach youth basic functional weightlifting movements within a group setting. By the end of this session, participants will have a toolbox that they can rely on to build movement, identify common errors accompanied with corrections to those errors. Functional movement areas of focus will be squat, front squat, deadlift, press, push press, and thruster. All movements will be taught without load but come prepared to move as we will learn by doing. No prior knowledge is required. Session will be capped at 35 participants.
In addition to enhancing active living and movement skill development, physical education and wellness improves students' knowledge, understanding, skills and procedures in the areas of safety, character development, financial literacy, growth and development, healthy eating, and healthy relationships. Discover ways to intentionally target learning outcomes, examine cross-curricular learning and enhance student engagement. Together, we will explore ways to bring physical education outcomes into the classroom and wellness outcomes into the gymnasium.
