CANCELLED -Teaching Equitable and Inclusive Texts: Experiences from a high school teacher in the trenches
Thursday February 20, 2025 9:00am - 10:00am MST
As of late, there is a pervasive call in the English Language Arts classroom to reflect the diverse and intersectional lives of our students. As such, this session focuses on the vital role of diverse literature in approaching intersectionality, diversity, and social justice in the English Language Arts curriculum. It is crucial that we as educators create inclusive and equitable learning environments that reflect the diverse experiences and identities of our students. Integrating diverse literature can profoundly impact our students' understanding of various perspectives, foster empathy, and encourage critical thinking about social justice issues. Research shows that when provided with literature that reflects the diverse, intersectional, and critical lives of our very own students, and they are given a way to express this learning in diverse literacies, they thrive. Teaching diverse literacies is not only paramount for developing critical literacy, it gives students, teachers, and schools the tools to approach systemic marginalization, disrupting harmful histories and stereotypes. In this interactive session, we will delve into text recommendations and effective strategies for incorporating diverse literature into the English Language Arts curriculum.

Adopt a Pond or Path
Thursday February 20, 2025 1:00pm - 2:00pm MST
Participation in the Adopt a Pond or Path initiative encourages individuals and groups to steward a specific natural area close to home, school or work. Participants agree to 1. visit their pond or path often enough to fall in love with it; 2. pick up trash; 3. report invasive species on EDDMapS app; and 4. invite one or two others to do the same.  Perhaps you or your class or club could adopt a pond or path close to your school?

a) Weekly Nature Walks Rx
b) Waste in our World, especially all that packaging that we often pick up near our ponds and paths.
c) Invasive Species.  Identifying and reporting using EDDMapS app (5 for 2025). Organizing a weed pull in May or June.  (Downy Brome is easy to pull and abundant.)
b) Riparian Health.  Restoration sites as learning sites. World Decade of Ecosystem Restoration 2021-2030 as a response to the climate and biodiversity situation in which we are immersed.
d) Student Council leadership in cooperation with parent councils and teacher advisors.
e) Launch of year 5 of the Adopt a Pond initiative on or near World Water Day, March 22.  (Science Fair day this year)
Spring Clean-up of ponds and paths by Earth Day, April 22.

This initiative is supported by Southeast Alberta Watershed Alliance and Grasslands Naturalists. Their representatives will be present along with Lorna, the ED of Palliser Airshed Society.  Those who sign up for classroom presentations by SEAWA, Grasslands Naturalists, or Palliser Airshed will be entered into a draw.  The prize is a quilt made by Lorna; it will be on display at our booth  in the non-profit  area.

Dare to Repair. There is no “Out” to which it can be thrown!

Repair Cafés bring back the social aspect of mending while doing something to address textile waste in our
world. The theme for Earth Day 2025 is Textile Waste. Pick up from that website some reasons for avoiding
fast fashion. Wearing clothes a bit longer will involve replacing a lost button, or fixing a tear. Create a
mending circle at home or at school or at a nearby seniors home. Enjoy getting together with others to mend
and share tips for doing the job. If you like, you may bring something to mend at this session.
At school, invite student council and parent council and 3 or 4 interested teachers to collaborate on creating a
Repair Café at your school, involving parents and students of all ages.
A monthly Repair Café is offered downtown at the Arcade Plaza to mentor those who are starting a repair café
at their school or nearby community. Together we can figure out what might work best for a Repair Café
where you live or work or go to school. Come to this session, or meet me at 415 Third Street SE in Medicine
Hat after school (after 3:30) on the first Thursdays of March and April.
One fifth of global waste is textile waste. Waste reduction is a big part of healthier air, water, and land, for the
benefit of people and the planet. Representatives from Southeast Alberta Watershed Alliance, Palliser
Airshed, and Grasslands Naturalists will be introduced. These are local groups figuring out how to improve the
health of air, water and land in SE Alberta.
While the focus of the 2:30 session is “Repair Cafés”, there will be also time to share information about the

Unlocking Potential: The Power of Compassion For Students Who Struggle
Thursday February 20, 2025 1:00pm - 2:00pm MST
Join me for an engaging session where I’ll share my journey growing up with trauma, familial instability, and emotional dysregulation, alongside undiagnosed ADHD. I often felt lost and disconnected from teachers who didn’t know how to connect with me, but a few caring educators truly made a difference by taking the time to understand me and recognize my potential. Today’s classrooms are filled with kids facing similar challenges, and if we’re going to have compassion for them, we also need to cultivate compassion for ourselves as educators. Together, we’ll explore how showing interest, recognizing strengths, and fostering a sense of belonging can make a real impact on our students’ lives.

While the focus of the 2:30 session is “Repair Cafés”, there will be also time to share information about the
Adopt a Pond agreement, and introduce Grasslands Naturalists, SEAWA and the Palliser Airshed Society

These activities are simple, adaptable, and effective and were developed over the course of many years in the music room. They can work with classes of any size, in all kinds of spaces, and using any instruments and materials you already have or can easily obtain. You will leave this session with some fresh ideas to spice up your Division 2 music program starting next week!

Life in Tanzania
Thursday February 20, 2025 2:30pm - 3:30pm MST
My grade 3 class had the opportunity to be pen pals with students from a small school in Arusha, Tanzania. We were able to share what life is like in rural Alberta and compare it first hand to life in Tanzania. Students created games and videos explaining how to play some of the math and learning games we play in our classroom. Through bake sales, we were able to fund raise enough money to purchase a water reservation system, repair the roof on the school, and purchase a photo copier. I had the opportunity to spend a week in Tanzania, work with the students, and take them games, food, and school supplies. Through personal connection we were able to create authentic learning opportunities.
